BEETHOVEN, SCHULHOFF, AND DVORAK

Works of Schulhoff and Dvorak show a combination of intimacy and orchestral richness possible only in a string sextet. Setting the stage is the Op. 104 Quintet of Beethoven, the composer’s own arrangement of one of his popular early piano trios—a creative translation that highlights his later reverence for the expressive potential of string ensembles.

MOZART AND MENDELSSOHN

“Youth is wasted on the young” sometimes rings true, but not when the young are composing music like this. Each composer here astounded equally as a child, carrying their extraordinary gifts onward through stellar careers.

WINTER FESTIVAL I Tuesday, February 2, 2021 7:30PM   ·   More Info »
WINTER FESTIVAL I

This season's Winter Festival celebrates the prolific output and influence of Franz Schubert, one of music's truly timeless geniuses.

Like a shooting star, Franz Schubert blazed across music’s sky for a brief 31 years, leaving behind over 1,000 works that transformed the Classical into the Romantic age. His lifestyle continues to bewilder; his output continues to astound; and his impact on performers and listeners can only be explained in terms of magic.

Four programs spanning Schubert’s creative career and variety of compositions offer a rich journey into one of music’s most ethereal worlds. A fifth concert explores the legacy of Schubert and how composers in the two centuries following his death have re-worked and been inspired by his compositions.

ARENSKY AND BRAHMS

Energy, passion, and quintessential Russian and Viennese styles abound in this pairing of composers deeply embedded in their singular cultures. The Slavic melancholy and melodramatic abandon of Arensky give way to Brahms's Gypsy flair and stately Germanic structure. At intermission, listeners will travel 1,200 miles from Moscow to Vienna in 20 minutes!
